Fans Flock to West Orange for David Cassidy Historical Marker Celebration

Beau & Katie Cassidy pose by the Historical Marker installed in Downtown West Orange in honor of their father, former pop star David Cassidy

Downtown West Orange had its own pop-culture takeover this summer, thanks to a three-day celebration honoring former teen idol and music legend David Cassidy. And when we say fans showed up—we mean they showed up. Visitors traveled from across the country and as far as the UK, Switzerland, Poland, and even Australia to be part of the moment.

Cassidy’s devoted community came together to fund a historical marker at Colgate Field, where he played baseball as a kid growing up in West Orange. The weekend’s main event included the official marker unveiling and the renaming of Elm Street—the street where he once lived. Cassidy’s children, actors Katie and Beau Cassidy, were on hand for the dedication, sharing memories and celebrating alongside fans who have kept his legacy alive for decades.

The celebration wrapped with a full-on Downtown Thursdays 70s Dance Party, which turned into one of those “only in West Orange” evenings. A torrential downpour forced everything inside at the last minute—but thanks to the West Orange Elks Lodge, the party never missed a beat. Bell bottoms stayed dry, disco stayed hot, and the groovy vibes held strong.

Beyond the nostalgia and good energy, the weekend also spotlighted West Orange’s real musical roots to the visitors. After all, West Orange is the town where Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, where Carole King found inspiration for “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” and where legendary artists like AC/DC and Meatloaf recorded albums at the iconic House of Music studio. The Cassidy celebration brought all of that history back into the spotlight—and brought an estimated $60,000 into the local economy.
After the success of this event, the Downtown West Orange Alliance is exploring ways to keep building on the town’s rich music legacy. So stay tuned—there’s more to come, and we promise it’ll be just as memorable.
